Calibration
Keep calibration results, tolerance decisions and follow-up work connected.
Before you start
Calibration is a Manage capability. Use the installed calibration guide and locally approved measurement procedure for application execution.
- Calibration capability with training instrument/data-sheet access.
- A fictional measurement range, agreed tolerances and test results.

01 · Basics — Understand the building blocks
Calibration capability is included in Manage. Calibration work needs a defined measurement procedure and an explicit interpretation of the observed result.
As-found and as-left results answer different questions: what condition the instrument arrived in and what condition it was left in.
Topics in this series
- Instruments and data sheets
- Test points and tolerances
- As-found results
- Adjustment and as-left results
- History and follow-up
02 · Configuration — Work through the setup
Use a training environment and match the actions to the IBM guide for your installed build.
- Select a training instrument and inspect its calibration requirements.
- Define or select an approved training data sheet with test points and tolerances.
- Create the associated calibration work through the installed process.
- Record as-found values, then any adjustment and as-left values according to that procedure.
- Review the result, follow-up requirements and retained history.
03 · Practical example
Fictional teaching example
In a teaching example a 100-unit test point allows 99 to 101. An as-found value of 103 is outside the example tolerance; a later as-left value of 100 does not erase the original result.
04 · Practice and verify
Record one passing and one out-of-tolerance test and explain the required follow-up.
Expected result
Original and final results remain distinguishable, with a traceable tolerance decision.
Common mistakes
- Replacing an as-found failure with an as-left pass.
- Using undocumented tolerances.
05 · Advanced concepts
Explore reference standards, overdue calibration and assessment of prior measurements after an out-of-tolerance result.
