Linear Asset Management
Locate work along an asset using measures and reference points.
Before you start
Linear is documented as included in Manage. The exercise is conceptual until matched to the installed linear-asset applications and configuration.
- Linear capability and a training asset.
- An agreed measure unit, direction and two known reference points.

01 · Basics — Understand the building blocks
Linear asset management represents assets whose relevant properties and work locations vary along a length. A start/end measure identifies a segment within that asset.
Consistent units, direction and reference conventions allow two people to identify the same work area.
Topics in this series
- Linear asset model
- Measures and references
- Segments and work
- Validation
- Features and spatial context
02 · Configuration — Work through the setup
Use a training environment and match the actions to the IBM guide for your installed build.
- Define a fictional 10-kilometer linear asset using the supported asset procedure.
- Record its measure convention and reference points.
- Create a training work record for the segment from kilometer 2.0 to 2.5.
- Inspect the recorded segment and its relation to the asset's full extent.
- Test an out-of-range or reversed segment and document the configured validation behavior.
03 · Practical example
Fictional teaching example
A fictional pipe has a defect between kilometer 2.0 and 2.5. Describing it merely as a defect on the pipe loses the location needed by the work crew.
04 · Practice and verify
Create two nonoverlapping work segments and show how each can be located unambiguously.
Expected result
Both segments have consistent units and direction, and invalid measures are rejected or identified for correction.
Common mistakes
- Mixing meters and kilometers.
- Assuming a text description preserves the measure convention.
05 · Advanced concepts
Explore changing attributes along the asset, features and spatial context. Test what happens when the asset's reference convention changes.
