Planning and Scheduling
Build a feasible work plan before trying to optimize it.
Before you start
Planning and scheduling is a Manage capability. Verify installed applications and Optimizer availability separately; do not assume a separate Scheduler add-on is required.
- Planning/scheduling application access.
- Three training work orders, a calendar and known resource availability.

01 · Basics — Understand the building blocks
Manage planning and scheduling relates work requirements to available resources and dates. Scheduler capability and an Optimizer solve are distinct activities.
Work duration, resource hours, calendars and dependencies must be interpreted consistently.
Topics in this series
- Work readiness
- Calendars and resources
- Dependencies
- Schedule review
- Optimization handoff
02 · Configuration — Work through the setup
Use a training environment and match the actions to the IBM guide for your installed build.
- Prepare three work orders with durations, required skills and dependencies.
- Create a small schedule using the available scheduling application.
- Inspect the resource calendar and exceptions for the planning window.
- Place the work and examine overlaps, dependencies and unavailable periods.
- Change one availability assumption and review the impact before committing the plan.
03 · Practical example
Fictional teaching example
Two tasks each need four resource hours, but one depends on a delivered part. Eight available hours alone do not make both tasks ready to schedule.
04 · Practice and verify
Create a one-day schedule, then remove half the resource availability and explain the resulting changes.
Expected result
The proposed plan respects readiness, skill, calendar and dependency assumptions.
Common mistakes
- Scheduling work that is not ready.
- Treating effort and elapsed duration as interchangeable.
05 · Advanced concepts
Progress to resource leveling, dispatch and optimization scenarios supported by the deployment. Capture the baseline before publishing changes.
