Maximo Spatial
Connect a maintenance record to its geographical context.
Before you start
MAS learning path. Match the component documentation to your installed release and maintenance build before configuring it.
- Spatial deployed with compatible Manage and GIS versions.
- A test map/service, a known feature and a training asset; access for a planner and a restricted user.

01 · Basics — Understand the building blocks
Spatial connects Maximo records with GIS features. A feature is the mapped object; an asset, location or work order is the operational record. Their identifiers must be linked deliberately.
Map Manager configures maps and map services for spatially enabled applications. A map that opens successfully does not by itself prove that records, layers or editing permissions are correct.
Topics in this series
- GIS and Maximo identities
- Map Manager and map services
- Record linking
- Spatial work planning
- Synchronization and troubleshooting
02 · Configuration — Work through the setup
Use a training environment and match the actions to the IBM guide for your installed build.
- Identify the GIS feature identifier, Maximo asset identifier and site before configuring the link.
- In Map Manager, inspect or create a training map and configure the approved map service using your installed-version instructions.
- Associate the map with the intended site and verify that the test user can access the map service.
- Link one training asset using the supported record-linking mechanism. Open it in a spatially enabled application.
- Select the feature and compare its identity with the record. Reopen the record and repeat as the restricted user.
03 · Practical example
Fictional teaching example
Riverbend Water has two pumps with similar descriptions at different sites. The map must select the intended feature for asset RB-PUMP-01 in site RB01; matching descriptions are insufficient.
04 · Practice and verify
Link one asset and one work location. Record the feature key, site, map/layer and the result of record-to-map and map-to-record navigation.
Expected result
Both directions resolve the same site-qualified record. An unlinked feature remains unlinked, rather than opening a similarly named asset.
Common mistakes
- Confusing map availability with feature linkage.
- Ignoring coordinate systems, service authentication or site assignment.
05 · Advanced concepts
Next examine GIS synchronization, ownership of geometry and attributes, and recovery from an unavailable service. Treat offline/mobile mapping as a separately configured and tested path.
