Maximo Utilities
Learn compatible unit estimating and how a design becomes executable work.
Before you start
MAS learning path. Match the component documentation to your installed release and maintenance build before configuring it.
- Utilities installed with training estimating access.
- A fictional work location, approved training rates and a small compatible-unit library.

01 · Basics — Understand the building blocks
Utilities supports compatible unit estimating and utility work processes. A compatible unit is a reusable definition of work resources used in an estimate; it is not an individual installed asset.
IBM distinguishes a nondesign flow using job plans from a design flow using compatible unit estimation. Choose the flow based on the work being planned.
Topics in this series
- Utility business flows
- Compatible unit library
- Estimate requests and versions
- Acceptance and work handoff
- Crew, GIS and accounting integration
02 · Configuration — Work through the setup
Use a training environment and match the actions to the IBM guide for your installed build.
- Choose a repeatable design task such as installing a standard valve assembly.
- Inspect the compatible unit definition and identify its labor, material and equipment assumptions.
- Create a training estimate request/version and add the applicable stations, units and quantities using the documented Utilities flow.
- Calculate the estimate and compare one unit with a manually calculated resource total.
- Change only the quantity, recalculate, and inspect the resource/cost difference. Trace the documented acceptance and work-order handoff without altering production work.
03 · Practical example
Fictional teaching example
An illustrative unit needs two labor hours and one valve. Three units need six base labor hours and three valves before any configured adjustments. If the estimate differs, identify the adjustment or rate instead of overwriting the total.
04 · Practice and verify
Compare one-unit and three-unit estimates and record the selected version, resources, adjustments and handoff result.
Expected result
You can explain every quantity and price used by the selected estimate version, and distinguish that estimate from actual work cost.
Common mistakes
- Confusing a compatible unit with an asset record.
- Comparing totals from different estimate versions or rate bases.
05 · Advanced concepts
Explore estimate revisions, design changes, crew qualifications, financial handoff and GIS context. Preserve the accepted version when analyzing later changes.
